The mixing of the powder E950 with water should be done whenever possible at the location (in situ) of the transit-box to be sealed.
The added water should be of drinking water quality and only as much sealant should be prepared as is necessary for immediate use.
The sealing compound E950 is mixed with water on the job site by stirring E950 powder into the water with a mixing ratio of about 2 parts of powder E950 to 1 part of water.
The minimum mixing time should be 5 minutes and the formation of lumps should be avoided.
The mixture has the correct consistency when it runs, free of lumps, in a thin stream without drop formation from the mixing stick from a height of 0.3 m (~1 ft.)
Checking for the proper mixing ratio of E950 powder and water
The sealant liquid can be poured from containers with spouts or through funnels and it can be pumped with any water-lifting pump into the transit-box.
Thus, even transit-boxes with hard-to-reach filling studs can be filled. The pumps have to be cleaned after use by simply pumping water through them.
The transit-boxes are filled properly when both, the filling and the venting, studs are filled to the rim and shrinkage of the sealant compound ceased (see Figure C). For vertical transits, the box has to be filled to the top rim.
If the correct mixing ratio for E950 powder and water is used, the resulting sealant liquid is always easy to pour and easy to pump (see also the “drip-test” above).
Large premixed quantities of sealant should be stirred periodically in order to maintain their uniformity and smoothness.
The sealant liquid has a pot life of about 60 minutes after which it gels to a jelly-like consistency.
Hardening occurs after about 3 to 4 hours at room temperature.
Complete chemical curing occurs after 72 hours and requires frost-free conditions.
Precautions should be taken to avoid any movement of freshly sealed cables for at least the first 24 hours.
Only after this time may the final fasteners for the cables can be secured to the cable trays or holders.
Note: The water-mixed sealant E950 should not be applied at temperatures below 3°C (~37°F). The E950 powder has a shelf life of 3 years when stored in its original packing in a dry and frost-free environment. The impregnation liquid E824 should be stored frost free and has a shelf life of 2 years. The shelf life of the swell modules R318 and R380 is unlimited in a dry and frost-free environment.
