Testing and Approvals
|
In the USA, the building codes require fire tests to be performed according to the specifications of the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM), and American National Standards (ANSI). For through penetrations the applicable standard is: ASTM Standard E 814-02, entitled “Fire Tests of Through-Penetrations Firestops” which were incorporated in testing by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., (UL®) under ANSI/UL 1479, by Omega Point Laboratories, Inc., and by other testing laboratories. For endurance rating of construction joints the tests follow the specification of "Tests for Fire Resistance of Building Joint Systems" in ANSI/UL 2079. The test results are listed on line and each year in the UL®'s Fire Resistance Directory, under special UL® system numbers and by other testing laboratories in their publications. Canada accepts UL® tests and approvals with F rating designated as FH and T rating designated as FTH (see Summary of UL® Approved Systems in Canada).
According to the test requirements of ASTM E 119, “Fire Tests of Building Construction and Materials, Time-Temperature Curve” (NFPA 251, ANSI/UL Standard 263), the oven's temperature are given, as an example, in the table below. This is incorporated in ASTM E 814-02.
According to the International Standard (ISO) 834-1 the temperatures in the furnace are given below and compared with ASTM E 119:

where the ambient temperature was taken to be 20ºC. The furnace
temperature of ISO 834 can be fitted by the formula:
T(ºC) = 345 log10 (8 t min +1) +20ºC.
As can be seen, the ISO's temperatures are very close to the ASTM E 119 temperatures with maximum difference of 5% (60ºC=108ºF).
FLAMMADUR® E473 SYSTEMS HAVE BEEN TESTED AND CERTIFIED BY UNDERWRITERS LABORATORIES, INC. (UL®), SOME BY FACTORY MUTUAL INSURANCE COMPANY (FM Global Technologies LLC), AND SOME BY OMEGA POINT LABORATORIES, INC.
Some Flammadur® systems have been tested and approved according to the following:
IEEE Standard 634
DIN 4102 in Germany
SIS024820 in Sweden
JISA1304 in Japan
ISO 834 International
For Marine Applications: "Geaquello System": The tests were made for A60 bulkheads and decks according to Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974, regulation II-2/3.5; II-2/18.1.2 and according to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Resolution A759(18) and IMO Resolution MSC 61(67), Annex 1, Part 3 and Annex 2.
